Thalassemia carrier status and groundwater iron: Implication for iron supplementation program for children in Bangladesh

چکیده
Background: Thalassemia, a congenital disorder of hemoglobin synthesis is characterized by low and high iron status, prevalent in Bangladesh. Iron, consumed through drinking groundwater also increases the population status The study examined effect containing micronutrient powder (MNP) on ferritin Bangladeshi children with thalassemia their non-thalassemia peers exposed to concentration from groundwater. Design methods: Three hundred twenty-seven aged 2–5 years were recruited for an MNP efficacy trial. A sub sample ( n = 222) screened thalassemia. Hemoglobin levels measured without Intake key sources—diet, was measured. Mann Whitney t-test employed compare groups. Results: at endpoint remained unchanged relative baseline; 11.56 ± 0.59 g/dL (Endpoint) versus 11.6 0.54 (Baseline), p 0.83. In tended increase; 12.54 0.72 12.41 (baseline), 0.06. Baseline reserve body significantly 0.03) higher carriers (594 gm) compared non-carrier (558 gm). increase infection-adjusted baseline 7.37% 0.7) 10.17% 0.009) carrier groups respectively. Conclusions: Bangladesh, coexistence exposure renders anemia prevention program potentially lesser hazardous carriers.

Iron status of women is associated with the iron concentration of potable groundwater in rural Bangladesh.
Women of reproductive age are at a high risk of iron deficiency, often as a result of diets low in bioavailable iron. In some settings, the iron content of domestic groundwater sources is high, yet its contribution to iron intake and status has not been examined. In a rural Bangladeshi population of women deficient in dietary iron, we evaluated the association between groundwater iron intake an...

Over the past 30 years, tubewells have become a ubiquitous source of potable groundwater in South Asia. Considered safer than surface water, groundwater naturally contains minerals that may impact human health; however, few data exist on tubewell water mineral content or its association with human nutritional or health conditions. We surveyed iron concentration in tubewell water across a 435 km...

Background: Micronutrients deficiency is one of the most health problems in the world. Iron and zinc deficiency and their interaction with vitamin A are important, too. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementation of iron and zinc, alone or combined, on vitamin A status of primary school children. Material and methods: The study was a randomized double-blind clinica...
